The Beginnings ...

In the fall of 1998, about 20 men and women, most of whom had charismatic Baptist backgrounds, began holding weekly meetings in Upper Marlboro, Maryland to pray and study the Bible. They felt something was missing within them and found comfort with each others support while simultaneously seeking direction from God. They began to move their weekly prayer and Bible study from one member’s house to another. As they rotated from house to house, they began to feel a new relationship developing among themselves. A feeling of closeness, togetherness, and unconditional love, which seemed different from all the years they had spent knowing themselves as acquaintances. Apparently, this was what was missing in their lives. They individually had a relationship with God, but lacked a relationship of unconditional love with one another. God began to draw other people experiencing the same void in their lives to this group. This was in essence the foundation of Agape Life Ministries, Inc.

In the weeks following the September 25, 1998 meeting, a “Leadership Group” emerged and they met with Dr. Les Brickman, a recognized expert in the home-cell ministry at the now-defunct Shoney’s Restaurant, located in the Hillandale Shopping Centre on New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland. Dr. Brickman, was expected to impart insight into how to organize and begin a formal implementation of the cell-based concept which the members had embraced during their initial rotation of meetings from house to house. Since Dr Brickman was literally en route to Russia with his wife to start a cell church in Russia, he recommended Rev Tom Mabie, who was one of his graduate students to work with the Leadership Group as a consultant, and trainer. With most of the initial members having Baptist backgrounds, the Leadership Group also decided to meet with Dr. Robert Cochran, Associate Executive Director, D.C. Baptist Convention on September 30, 1998 to explore the possible affiliation of the yet-to-be formed ministry with the D.C. Baptist Convention.

The name Agape Life Ministries, Inc. came about because the initial members had experienced God’s unconditional (agape) love and that love compelled them to share the same with the entire body of Christ and the World. With a ministry name chosen and other preliminary details in place, a date was set for the inauguration of the new cell-based church. in place, a date was set for the inauguration of the new cell-based church. On Sunday, October 18. 1998, the inaugural “Celebration Service” was held at Holiday Inn, located at 10000 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, Maryland. Evangelist Spencer Duncan’s message, aptly titled, “The Davidic Generation” was heard by 121 adults as 57 children received care in adjoining rooms.
